Tax will apply when you access your retirement savings before retirement. Withdrawals from your savings pot are taxed at your personal income tax rate, while withdrawals from your vested pot are taxed according to SARS's withdrawal tax tables. Tax will reduce the amount you receive and may leave you with less money available when you retire. The retirement pot cannot be taken as cash before retirement.
